Abstract

This mixed methods study examines the integration of news literacy, Javanese local wisdom (kearifan lokal Jawa), and language and cultural education among university students in Central Java, Indonesia. Grounded in critical media literacy theory, sociocultural learning frameworks, and ethno-pedagogical principles, the study employed a sequential explanatory design combining quantitative surveys administered to 342 undergraduate students from four universities across Semarang, Solo, and Purwokerto, with qualitative semi-structured interviews involving 22 participants. Findings reveal that news literacy competencies significantly predicted students' critical cultural engagement with Javanese language and values, while kearifan lokal dimensions — including the philosophical principles of tepa slira, memayu hayuning bawana, and unggah-ungguh — served as generative ethical frameworks for evaluating and contextualizing news content. Digital media consumption patterns moderated the relationship between news literacy and cultural engagement, with students who consumed news through platforms integrating Javanese cultural commentary demonstrating superior language proficiency and cultural identity consolidation. The study proposes an integrated ethno-media literacy framework for language and cultural education in Central Javanese universities.
